Materials and styles best for driveway gates and why

Purchasing a new gate can be overwhelming since the choice is huge. Driveway gates provide that first impression of your property, and it’s, therefore, essential to get the appearance absolutely right.

Below is a guide to each material and style. It’s important to consider all the differences to achieve the perfect gate for your property.

Wrought iron

All of our traditionally crafted wrought iron gates are made to measure by our team to achieve the appearance you’re looking for. We manufacture both standard and bespoke designs, and you can pick between the different standard options to make them your own.

The skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating a wrought iron gate is incredible, resulting in a high-quality product for your home, which in turn adds value. Our expertise ensures that your gate will be beautifully created.

The pros:

  • Strong and durable

  • Coated in a colour of your choice

  • Highly resistant to dents, bending and shock damage

  • Rust resistance

  • Increased security

  • Highly decorative

  • Bespoke designs

  • High level of craftsmanship

  • Automated and manual

  • Low-maintenance

Aluminium

Our selection of aluminium gates reproduce the most popular styles of traditional wooden gates, but have the benefit of increased longevity and being virtually maintenance-free.

As with our wrought iron gates, they are manufactured to your own precise requirements in a range of styles and in the colour of your choice.

Our aluminium gates are constructed from sections which are precision cut and joined in much the same way as wooden gate component parts. This means that they look much more like wood but without the shrinkage or swelling that wood can be susceptible to.

Top tip: you only need to wipe them down with soapy water to keep them looking brand new, so there's no need for treatments.

The pros:

  • Low maintenance

  • Longevity

  • Bespoke style

  • Colour choice

  • 10-year guarantee

  • Automated and manual

  • Lightweight

  • Does not rust or corrode

Wooden

An alternative to metal gates are our bespoke wooden gate services. Individually handmade by experienced and talented craftsmen, these elegant, classic gates are an attractive addition to your property. If you are in need of a moderately low-cost way of finishing the entrance to your property, we can also manufacture farm-style field gates.

All of our handcrafted gates are manufactured using traditional mortise and tenon construction with rebated boarding for grain-end protection.

However, we only supply wooden gates to customers requiring an automation system to be installed at the same time. As beautiful as wood appears, meanwhile, it is important to remember that it is a natural product and, as such, movement, swelling and contracting are to be considered normal occurrences.

Pros:

  • Cost-effective

  • Strong

  • Easy to repair

  • Highly versatile

  • Privacy

  • You can paint and stain to match existing woodwork

Metal wood-lined

Our metal wood-lined driveway gates are constructed from extremely robust galvanised frames which are then powder-coated in your choice of standard colour and lined or overlaid with your choice of wood.

This style of gate offers you the privacy of a close-boarded gate as well as the durability and strength that a non-rusting, metal frame construction brings. We are able to offer many varieties of wood for this design, all in a robust 20mm thick tongue and groove. We also offer Frake with a thermo-modified tongue and groove which helps to prevent shrinkage and expansion.

The choice of synthetic wood is also very popular – it is made from a recycled composite material and, as such, benefits from a very long life span and a virtually maintenance-free finish alongside the galvanised metalwork.

Pros:

  • Strong

  • Privacy

  • Available in a range of colours and styles

  • Stylish and contemporary

  • Longevity

  • Rust resistance

  • Increased security

  • Low-maintenance
